sociaty A study published in the journal Human-Animal Interactions analyzed data from 97 countries and found a statistically significant positive correlation between cat ownership rates and national happiness scores on the World Happiness Report. Countries with the highest cat-to-human ratios, including Iceland, Russia, and New Zealand, consistently ranked among the happiest populations globally.

Researchers cautioned that correlation does not equal causation, noting that wealthier, more stable countries tend to have both higher pet ownership and higher happiness scores. But the relationship held even after controlling for GDP and social support measures. The data suggests something about cats specifically, not just pet ownership in general, is connected to population wellbeing.

akurgo I suspect at some point it flattens. out and the cat correlation flips around. I wouldn't be happy long term with a cat density of say 4 cats per square meter.

xvf9 Important to point out that the study found correlation, not causation. Do cats make people happier? Do happier people get more cats? Do other factors lead to both happiness and cat acquisition? Probably the third, if I had to guess.
